What caused the vast rift between urban and rural American politics? - urban

As recently as Bill Clinton carried in 1996 to large parts of rural America, even in the south. Clinton and won many rural counties in Texas, while losses Harris and urban areas of Dallas. In little more than 10 years, America has almost polarized between urban and rural lines. In a conciliatory speech by Obama Rural America remains overwhelmingly rejected, as sure as urban America McCain, have overwhelmingly rejected.

So what are the causes? Why is urban America seems off-limits to the Republicans and rural America, far from the Democrats? This can not only because of abortion, gun rights and gay marriage!
